Seasons Change...Week 30

Season:  one of the four periods of the year (spring, summer, autumn, and winter), beginning astronomically at an equinox or solstice, but geographically at different dates in different climates.

Every morning on our way to my daughters school  we go past a ranch with a long row of big trees that surely change with the seasons but we hardly notice.  My kids and I have decided to embark on a project that will help us notice that gradual change on the trees.  My daughter Sophia  will take at least a weekly picture after school for a whole year, I will post it on my blog entry on Thursdays and my little one Xavi wants in it too so he will take a picture of some cows from a different ranch and improve his picture taking skills.

This picture taken on 4-27-11 on a 90 F weather so soon???   We made it to week 30  These threes remind me of a men's fresh new haircut.  I don't really know why!

Cow story:  the cows we used to take pictures of have been missing since December.  Kids are on the lookout!

Ok, we're tired of looking for cows with no luck!!  This time we stopped for fresh fruit!

These are the answers to my True or False game:

1.  True  When I was single I went to two missionary trips with my Church Youth Group.  Two great summers we spent in Nayarit, Mexico preaching the word of God, getting to know new places and meeting new people

2.  True  My bff straightened my hair with an iron for clothes.  She did, and I let her.  She used an iron for clothes because we didn't have a hair flat iron.  That was one of my first experiences with straight hair.

3.  True My arm was caught on a wringer roller washing machine when I was a kid.  I was such a little helper and my arm was caught once or twice in one of those things.  Nothing bad happened thanks to God.

4.  False  I've never had a check bounce before.  What... did you think I was perfect??  No way, I've had checks bounced, encounter high interest fees, bank charges, paid my dues etc, etc.  I also learned my lessons.

No 4 is false
we have a winner

Thank you all for playing!!
Love you lots!

Irriatatiblle math!

Sophia was working on long division a couple of weeks ago,
and was having a hard time.
Math is not her strongest and I was getting frustrated
not being able to help her much!
Not that I don't know division but how to teach her!
They had a chapter test and I told her to
concentrate and do her best!
She got 60% on the test...
The teacher will go over long division
again as most kids didn't do
well on the test only three of them got 100 %
On Spring break I told her we would go over her wrong answers...
she started doing it by herself and this is what she did!

Practice...practice she is finally getting her irriatatiblle math!

Special Job

That's me right there in the middle.  Green snicker blue sneaker!  Zoom it!

THE STORY:
Right out of High School I wanted to be  preschool teacher.
I attended a Community College
and earned an A.S. in preschool teaching.  My first job ever was at a daycare center,
I later worked at another daycare center.
Both jobs I dreaded :(  I later applied to be put on
the on call list as a substitute instructional aide at the San Ysidro School District .
I was often called to sub for the different preschools.  They also asked me if I
wanted to work at the special classes.  I said yes, I needed to work!  I was
called more and more often to the special classes
as if was hard to find people that were
willing to work there.
Special classes with special kids.
The kids that people felt sorry for, without knowing that feeling sorry for
them is the last thing that they need!  A position opened, I applied, I got the job.  I was officially a Health Clerk Instructional Aide at a severely handicapped class
grades K-6  I never regretted it.

THE WORK:
Hard work yes!  I won't deny it...Down syndrome, cerebral palsy,
spinal bifida, among other conditions.  Some kids had only one
condition, while others had a combination.  They were all at
different levels of cognitive skills.  Some kids were able to
work on math, reading and writing and were mainstreamed
in regular classes for a couple of hours a day.

Wheelchairs, feeding, diapering, countless seizures,
toilet training, lifting, chasing after runaways, therapy sessions,
riding the bus with them before and after school and following the
teacher's curriculum was an everyday thing.
A couple of the kids were taller and some stronger than me
I'm short and weighted less back then!

Lots of repetition on survival skills, such as how to brush their teeth,
comb their hair,   tie shoes, wash hands.
Pushing them harder and harder so that they were
able to reach a new milestone.
Lots of patience!

I worked with a wonderful teacher, and great coworkers.
I can really say we were a team and that surely made things easier for
all of us and also the fact we had a nice fully equipped classroom.

Oh...and I should mention that I also had a part time job
because I was paying for my new car!

There's the short straight hair (Mrs Ramirez)...I am bummed about that line across our faces :( sorry

 THE FUN:
Yes, we did have fun!  Fun Birthdays, and Holidays celebrations.  We cooked on
Thanksgiving and invite regular classes to our classroom
in the celebrations!   We baked Valentine's cookies and shared them with the school!
We took  local buses and trains to
movie theaters then stopped at McDonald's for lunch!
We visited local fairs.  We went  to the
pool on summer school sessions, we had Special Olympics and yearly trips
to Disneyland!  unforgettable...

I still have the medal I got at the Special Olympics.

THEIR PERSONALITIES:
Now they all had different personalities.
They were mischievous,  playful, stubborn, silly, lovable, dramatic, impulsive,
bossy, among other traits!  They changed from day to day too!
I also need to mention jealous!  A couple of the older boys
got very jealous and overprotected me when I started dating my now
husband.  He worked in the different schools in the District and
surely found ways to visit my school and my classroom more often.
The boys claimed me as their girlfriend!

This is sweet Ryan.  Little lovable guy!

 THE REWARDS:
There were many rewards!
The smiles on their faces when they greeted me in the mornings.
Their satisfaction when they wanted to show me
they finally learned how to tie their shoes.
Seeing how after lots of practice they learned how to write their names.
Their smiley faces when they mastered a new skill.
Promotions to the next grade level.
Celebrating graduations.

Me and Andrea doing dishes.  This picture made it to the school calendar, everybody saw me for the month of March

THE FAREWELL:
My heart was torn apart when I had to make the decision to leave the classroom.
We were newly weds and we were eager to start a family with me as
a full time housewife and a stay home mom.
My fertility wasn't helping.  Sophia came 2 1/2 yrs later.

This is the lovely card they gave me when I left...I treasury it!

THE COMEBACK:
I came back to work in the classroom 4 yrs later when my Sophie was  1 1/2 yrs old.
But things were not the same.  Even though my sister watched my baby
...my heart ached every time she cried when I went to work.

This time I was on a one to one basis with this kid named Randy.
He was 10 yrs old.
I don't recall his exact condition, but he could not walk,
nor he could sit on a wheel chair,
therefore he had to travel on a wagon.
He would wear a diaper as could not
control his bowel movements.
He couldn't talk either so he communicated with
us with a computer.  He was very smart
it was his body that did not respond.

We spent long hours working on puzzles
large puzzles...500 or 1000 pieces!
He certainly was good at it.  He pointed to a
specific piece, then showed me where to put it!
He was just amazing!
We also listened to two Harry Potter's audiotapes.
We watched one of the movies in the class
and went to the movie theater to see the other one.
He got sick on Christmas Break and didn't come back to school
We paid him a visit to cheer him up.
His health started to deteriorate more.
He died on April, 30 2004.
Devastating.
After Randy's death and
as soon as the school year was over
I went back for good to being a full time housewife and mom
and would not change that for the world.

This was a trip to Disneyland!  Randy's dream.  You can barely see him in the middle.

I do miss working there sometimes.
I enjoyed it and also learned a lot!
The everyday things we do and take as routines, they celebrate!
The innocence and pureness of heart about how they see and act on things we consider 'bad'
Lots and lots of things we 'normal' people take for granted...they treasure!

I really do hope that I made a difference in their lives...
because they really touched  mine and made a difference in it!

Seasons Change...Week 29

I finally can take a picture of the whole scene while driving!  (I am pretty sure that you've figured out that it's  I who's been taking the pictures)

Cow story:  the cows we used to take pictures of have been missing since December.  Kids are on the lookout!

We have been busy this week we didn't have time to plot our cow search. My father in law has been visiting and he lost his phone.  Yesterday we went out to shop for a phone for him.  We were riding on his car, got to the parking lot.  We all got out of the car (we meaning five people) and as I looked back to see who was holding Xavi's hand I didn't see him.  He was locked inside the car.  It so happened that he climbed to the front seat where I sat and grandpa thought I would help him out.  Since he was sitting in the back seat I thought grandpa would help him out.  My poor baby was hitting the window and crying (OK so it was 10 seconds but he was crying desperately and he told me "you forgot me..." my heart broke :(  I've never thought this would happen to me.

Once we went in the store, the first thing we saw was a vault door and we all made sure Xavi didn't get locked in there.  Sad story!

Here are the answers to the true or false game:

1.  True  When I was growing up our bedrooms, kitchen and living room walls were painted green, blue and yellow canary.  Me and my brothers thought the colors were weird and even discouraged my poor mom.  Now that I think of it  they weren't that bad!

2.  False  I was a cheerleader in High School  I told my mom I wanted to try out for cheer leading and she totally refused.  She told me, "I don't want them tossing you up in the air, grabbing your butt, and watching you undies" I was ok with her answer...she was right cheer leading was not for me anyways!

3.  True When I met my husband my hair was short and straight.  Yes, I had chemically straighten my hair a few  times and when my hair started to grow and my curls emerged he joked with me and once said "you deceived me"  But it was too late he had fallen in love with the inner me!  I am tempted to do it again.  I loved it.

4.  True I went to work with two different color sneakers.  Yes, me and my bff you know the one you make crazy things with.  We each bought a pair of sneakers.  Mine were green, hers were blue and we each got one of each color.  The kids at work would have a blast when I wore them!

Number 2 is false!
Thank you all for playing again
we have two winners!

(she is on a row, two times winner!)

Next Monday is the final chance to win!
Please come back!

I love you all ladies!

moncy3 the rescue

I found this book at one of my local thrift shops.  I though it would be a good example to show you
how I recycle an unwanted book into pretty envelopes!

See this I spy book and its pretty cover?

Well, it's been discarded!

water is the damage!

Water damage at the bottom of the book!

I tear the book apart and cut the damaged bottom

I find a template that can nicely fit the 'rescued pages'
I then trace, cut and glue!

Voila!

this is the final result!

If you haven't done so come and play along
on my true or false game

Have a great day my lovies.

I am happy to receive this award!
I am very honored and I am supposed to  share
ten things that I love...
So in no particular order except #1 of course
Here they are:

No1. I love my family!
I will admit that not every day things are fine and dandy here.
but these are the faces that I seek when I am sad,
these are the arms that hold me when I need comfort
and these are the people that I share my popcorn with
and yes, this is a Christmas picture I like it a lot
because we all came out 'good'
It's hard with five people you know!!

No2.  I love these kiddos!  The two on the left are mine
the other three are my sister's...they never fail to put a smile on my face.

No3.  I love my recently acquired  kids craft book!  Even If I don't try a single
