Hello dear friends and readers today I bring to you Nelly from Nelly with Wings. Don't you just love that name? Nelly has a colorful etsy shop where she sells Mexican inspired jewelry, accessories and home decor. Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to check out Nelly's shop.
1. Tell us as little or as much as you would like about yourself.
My name is Nelly. I was born and raised in a coastal town in Mexico, but had a bit of an adventurous spirit and moved with my husband to Toronto, Canada 14 years ago. We have a very smart and good-hearted 5-year-old son, who is our lifelong project, and we love him to pieces.
2. What do you sell?
I sell Mexico-inspired handmade jewelry, accessories and home decor.
3. Why handmade?
Because it is creative, beautiful, useful, and made with great care.
4. Where does your inspiration to create come from and/or your inspiration in life?
Inspiration for my work comes from the bright colours of my native Mexico. I also get inspired by the samples of interior finishing materials I come by often at work. My inspiration in life has two sources: Jesus Christ, and my husband, who is the greatest and brightest person I have ever met, besides Jesus, that is.
5. Besides creating what else do you do? Do you have a full time job?
I am an Architect, and work full time for a great firm.
6. When did you start thinking you were an artist?
Very recently, actually. I have done all sorts of creative things throughout my life, such as dancing, drawing, painting, designing living spaces, picking materials and colours, hand-sewing, and even a little bit of writing, but to me, an artist, was someone doing one or all of the above, but either full time, or with work publicly displayed somewhere. Well, now I display some of my work on Etsy and finally fit into my own description of an artist. Work does not count because I only get to do the fun creative stuff occasionally.
7. Who has been most influential in your craft work?
First and foremost my grandma, who is an accomplished seamstress and fashion genius, and at his 80+ years of age is still learning new crafts; my mom who taught me the basics of knitting, and sat with me for hours to attach millions of sequins and seed beads to my ballet costumes; the nuns in my school who taught me to embroider and crochet, and recently, my team mates on Etsy (the Christian Artists Street Team), who generously give invaluable advice and support to my Etsy shop.
8. Where would you like to be in five years?
Retired from Architecture, and dedicated full time to enjoying raising my son, crafting, traveling with my family, and spending more time with God, who I affectionately call "Papa Dios".
9. Is there anything you'd like to try doing that you haven't done?
crafts, sports, life in general?
One day I want to learn to use a loom and make a tapestry. I would love to hike to the top of a high mountain with my husband. Finally, I want to try my hand at writing a blog some day. Yes, it is a lot, but it seems doable.
