What is your favorite part about being an artist?

I love getting lost in the process of creating art. Being fully intent and concentrating deeply on my subject.
Sometimes when I "come up for air" and step away from the piece, it’s a surprise to see it come to life!
Another part about being an artist that I love, is sharing my art with the world in an affordable multipurpose way.

Tell us a little about you, what is your background and where do you come from?
I grew up in southern California and went to college at Sonoma State University. At twenty, I moved to the East Coast and after a bit of struggle, continued my art training at Portland School of Art. I spent about six years as a graphic designer at an advertising firm and in a large company where I digitized art for embroidered work clothes. Later I opened an art gallery where I also taught classes in watercolor. Marriage and children followed so I took a ten year "baby sabbatical" where I focused my energy on raising my two beautiful children, who are now incredible teenagers. In 2005 I discovered ACEOs on eBay and began creating the little works of art. My versions of this small format began to sell immediately and I found myself inspired to create more. Over the years I have painted and sold about 500 ACEO originals and 1,000's of prints, plus built a whole art business based on those small painitngs.

When did you first start drawing and painting?

I’ve been making art since I was about seven years old. I began seriously considering myself an artist and selling my work at thirteen, so I have known most of my life that I would find a way to earn a living as an artist.

Is there a particular place that brings you inspiration?

When I am out jogging on a country roads (which I do daily).  When I'm running with my little dog, I see spectacular vistas, or sunlight hitting distant mountains just so. Perhaps it's a vine meandering along a fencepost, and when I see these things, I become very inspired to capture what I see. I also love the notion of being very small, like a few inches tall and seeing the world of nature from that perspective. As Kahil Gibran wrote; "In the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed"

As an artist, what do you do to ‘give back’ or ‘pay it forward’ to your community? Top of the list for my “pay it forward” is the Art for Critters group that I co-lead. We are 25 artists who have donated over $52,000 to animal charity since 2006. I just ran my third “Run for the Critters” a couple of weeks ago! Last year in my “Run for the Critters”, I personally raised $1500. This year in May I raised $500 and so far $1071 for this week's race. I also delight in promoting other artists which I try to do daily on Twitter.

  4. I've always wished that I had some kind of artistic talent...sadly it has not been granted. Great featured artist. I appreciate the importance of giving back...and I think animal charities kinda get overlooked for people charities xx
